At the end of the 19th century, each village in the Lys Region has one or two breweries. Beer consumption is therefore extremely high by our standards: 400 litres per year per person, which equals about five pints a day throughout the year for each man and woman.
In 1892 twenty-three year old Omer Vander Ghinste starts a brewery in Bellegem. With the assistance of his wife, a daughter from a brewing family, he manages to sell his beer in Kortrijk as well. The brewery booms, and when lager beer gains momentum in the 1920s, Vander Ghinste has made enough money to build a cooling tower, which is indispensable for brewing lager beer.
The lager quickly becomes the most famous beer and gets the brand name Bockor in the 1930s; from 1977 to 2014, the brewery also bears this name. The Vander Ghinste family nevertheless continues to produce beer of spontaneous and high fermentation to this day. The most famous of these beers are Omer and Vander Ghinste RoodBruin, a red-brown beer typical of the Lys Region.
The corporate buildings have not been changed since 1948; only a warehouse has been added. The brewery gladly welcomes groups for company visits.
