Horse lovers will love our horse events. Waregem Koerse is a major event in international equestrianism.
But high-level races also take place on other days in the Lys Valley. At Gaverbeek Hippodrome in Waregem, the season runs from May to September. The ‘Memorial Day Races’ are organised on the Sunday closest to May 30; they honour the American soldiers from WWI that are buried in Waregem.
For years an international military has been organised during the last weekend of September at Gaverbeek Hippodrome, in Sports Vlaanderen Waregem and at Hemsrode Castle in Anzegem. During a military the horseman and horse show off their skills in various disciplines (dressage, jumping and cross country).
At Kuurne Hippodrome there are races in the spring and autumn. Don't miss the traditional ‘Mardi Gras Drafrennen’ on the Tuesday after Carnival.
In the Lys Valley, horsemen and horses don't only combat each other on the race tracks or during international events. Horse races are the traditional highlight of local fairs in many villages and hamlets. Winkel Koerse (street races in Sint-Eloois-Winkel) on the Tuesday after the first weekend of October is a very special event. It is the only horse race in Flanders that still takes place in the centre of the village. It has become a huge festival.
