Enjoy the peace and quiet, inhale the natural aromas and taste something delicious from this region. Below we offer some attractive places to picnic on the waterfront in the Lys Valley of East Flanders and West Flanders.

East Flanders Lys Valley


You reach Baarleveer via the Lys Valley cycling network (between nodes 71 and 74). The charming ferry brings you from one bank to the other and back again. You can picnic on the green banks of the Lys River or use the picnic benches.

Jetty Latem

The jetty in Sint-Martens-Latem, the grassy square behind the town hall and the church in Latem are great places to spread out a picnic blanket, enjoy some tasty refreshments and watch the yachts and cyclists go by. You can reach this grassy square via the Lys Valley cycling network (between nodes 67 and 74).

Astene Sas

The protected lock with drawbridge over the Lys River is still active at the Sas van Astene. The Sas van Astene is a recreational intersection for cyclists (Lys Valley cycling network, between nodes 11 and 13), ramblers and pleasure yachts. It's the ideal spot to put your feet in the water, enjoy a picnic and the revel in the beauty of nature.

De Brielmeersen

The recreational domain 'De Brielmeersen' is located at the Lys River in Deinze. You can picnic on the banks of the river near the marina. The recreational domain has an animal park, a play area and lots of nature. It's located between nodes 5 and 7 on the Lys Valley cycling network.

West Flanders Lys Valley

National Tobacco Museum

At the National Tobacco Museum there is an eye-catching red bicycle bridge that links the towpath at the museum with recreational domain De Balokken. At the intersection of the towpath and the bridge there is a shelter with a picnic table and info panel about the Lys Valley. You can picnic here on the border of Flanders, France and Wallonia. It's located near node 12 on the Lys Valley cycling network.

Pomp Building in Bossuit

The Pomp Building is a recreational operating base in the south of the region. The building is surrounded by nature. It's located at the intersection of the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal and the Scheldt River. You can picnic on the green lawns or on picnic benches. It's also the ideal departure point for a walk or cycling trip through the region. (node 86 on the Lys Valley cycling network).

Treble lock in Ooigem

The renovated treble lock is unique in Flanders. In the immediate vicinity there is a picnic lodge at the intersection of the Roeselare-Lys Canal and the Lys River. There is also a car park surrounded by nature. Follow the Lys Valley cycling network between nodes 59 and 71.

André Demedts house and old arm of the Lys River

The old arm of the Lys River is one of the most idyllic places in the West Flanders Lys Valley. The garden of the André Demedts house, which is on the bank, is a beautiful spot for a picnic. While you're there you can visit the museum or exhibition space. This picnic spot is located on the Lys Valley cycling network between nodes 76 and 58.

Sint-Eloois-Vijve Marina

Along the old arm of the Leie River in Sint-Eloois-Vijve you'll find Waregem's marina. This is a cosy spot to stop during your cycling trip or boat trip. You can drink something in the cafeteria or have a picnic on the picnic benches. This picnic spot is located on the Lys Valley cycling network between nodes 80 and 88.
